Making plans and Following through

Tonight I created yet another Excel sheet containing training and workouts until the Princess. It is really sad how many versions there have been since mid-December when I created the first one. Granted, the holidays got in the way more than I expected but since being back, I have created two more versions that I have not followed through with at all(other than training runs). I've been wanting to start Insanity again and do it with my husband. Well that has not happened. Whether it was my lack of motivation or him not being around, we just haven't gotten going like we should.

I think I have been overwhelmed by the task ahead of me. I want to make significant progress by my birthday and that gives me a shorter time frame than I had hoped. I am not going to be unrealistic and things that I want are completely within reach, it is just overwhelming at times.  I have been letting fear and doubt get the best of me the last few weeks. I know I can do this, I just have to give myself a swift kick and get moving.

Even though I haven't been doing the extra workouts that I wanted, I have been getting my training runs in and I have managed to lose a few pounds. Which tells me I haven't been completely failing, I have just been letting myself down by not reaching my full potential.

So Monday I will be kicking off a 6 week plan that is an Insanity/TurboFire hybrid. I'm going to give it a try for a little while and if it doesn't feel right, I will change it up and probably go back to just Insanity. I am really trying to focus on building more strength and lean muscle to help with my running. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that the Princess is getting so close. I know I can do it but I feel like it is sneaking up on us. I need to just start focusing on the day to day because looking down the road is freaking me out.

So tonight I printed my newest excel worksheet and Monday I WILL begin to follow through with it. It's going to be tough but I CAN do it. I just have to get over the fear and get it done. I'll try to check in a little more often to let you know how it is going.

Rest

I sort of feel like a slacker since I didn't start back with my workout program today but I figure my body could use another day of rest after Sunday's race. It's actually been a few days since I've done one of the Slim in 6 workouts but this time there was a real reason instead of just skipping them. I decided that since I was doing a lot of moving in the preparations for my yard sale that I was getting a decent workout. I could have done it Friday but I figured it wouldn't hurt to take a couple days off right before the 10 miler so I wasn't sore from phase 3 before the race even started. I was a little stiff and sore after the race yesterday so took it easy and made sure to take something for the soreness so I could sleep last night. Today I felt pretty good with the exception of some soreness in my back and my butt of all places. My legs feel fine but my glutes are still really sore. Since there is a really big portion of phase 3 that focuses on the glutes, I decided one more day of rest would probably be a good thing. I did go for a pretty good walk tonight. It was about 2 miles so I didn't completely slack off, I just didn't do the hard core workout.

I don't have too much longer before Mac gets home so I am going to try to really buckle down and hit phase 3 hard for the next 5 weeks. If I feel up to it I may move on to the Slim Series follow up workouts that I have but we'll see how it goes. If I feel like I have "mastered" the phase 3 workouts or if I get bored with it, I will move on. Otherwise I will probably stick with it until he gets home because it is a really good, intense workout.

I did have some more encouragement when I stepped on the scale Saturday. I  lost another 1.2 lbs so I am down to an even 135. I was finally able to say goodbye to 240 for good. I know that may sound a little odd but it really isn't. I only count my Saturday morning weigh-ins but I commit the cardinal sin of weight loss and weigh myself all the time. I can't help it, I just have to know what it is all the time. Your body naturally fluctuates a few pounds from day to day thanks to water weight and whatever, because of this, for a while, even though my weigh-in days were in the upper 230s, I would still see 240 every now and then, especially later in the day. I haven't seen 240 in over a week now and I couldn't be happier. Saturday's weigh-in also puts me at an overall weight loss of 27lbs since my heaviest. I have finally lost my first 10%. Now to focus on the next 5% and getting stronger.

I have another race next weekend, the Diva Dash 5K with obstacles. I'm looking forward to it. It will be my first obstacle course. I'm a little worried about some of them but knowing that you can bypass them if you struggle is making it a little easier to be excited for the race. Even though I am working out and getting a lot stronger, I am still seriously lacking in upper body strength and things like monkey bars scare me because my arms can't handle 235 yet. I don't know that anything like that will be part of the course, but if it is, I will be going around them. I'm just looking forward to a shorter distance again. I never thought I would think of a race as "just" 3 miles but I am glad that all of my upcoming races are just 5ks. I need to get better at the shorter distances so that I can train better for the longer ones later on.

I know I will be doing an 8K in September, the Wounded Warrior 8K in San Antonio. I have added a picture below that links you to my fundraiser page for the race. If you can, please consider giving to this cause that is very dear to my heart. I can't imagine what our wounded warriors go through and I pray that my husband never has to experience that but we know so many that have. This is the first race I have ever done with a fundraising requirement but I feel like it is worth it and a cause that more people need to be aware of.

Feel the Burn!

Holy crap, "Burn it up!" is INTENSE!

That is the phase 3 workout that I just tried and man, is it true to its name. And right now I look ROUGH, haha. Hopefully none of my neighbors were paying attention as I went outside to water my baby zucchini and squash plants(part of my food journey) in my SparkleTech skirt and crazy hair. I took off my headband and my hair was insane because of all the sweat.

It's crazy that this workout that I do in my house, under a ceiling fan, with the AC on can make me sweat more than I have ever sweat during a run even in the middle of the hottest summer in TX. That's what has been so crazy to me about this program. I have never really been one to sweat much. That was always something that confused me especially when I started running. At the end of a hard run I would just "glisten" but others I know would have sweat pouring everywhere. My husband sweats like crazy but it is never something I have done much, until now.

Phase three is an hour long workout that kicks up the intensity a few notches. I actually like the moves in this phase better than phase two and I think I am just going to go ahead and move on to it full time instead of alternating like I had planned. I can't do everything in it, of course, but I can do a lot. One thing that surprised me though was I had trouble with the plié section which hasn't happened in the past. It isn't actually that I have trouble doing the moves, it is that the length of the section or something about the combination of moves causes my feet to cramp up and makes continuing the workout hard. That's why today was actually my second attempt at doing the phase 3 workout. I thought it was the shoes I was wearing last time so I changed to a different pair today but started having the same problem. When it came time to repeat the entire plié section again, I opted to skip on to the next part which allowed me to be able to finish the workout. There were a few times that I was not able to do as many reps as she did or I had to modify a move here or there but I still did it. I can't do 2 sets of 15 push-ups but I can do a few now. By the time we were on the mats for the floor work I was sliding because I was so sweaty and a few times it actually dripped off my forehead on to the mat. The moves are a little more difficult but where the intensity really comes from is the overall pace of the workout is much faster. You really don't stop moving the entire time. Instead of marching between segments you are jogging or doing jumping jacks. Everything is just a little faster so you really get a great workout during those 60 minutes.

I'm getting a little more excited about the program again. There are still times when I think she is crazy and the number of reps on new moves are too high but I know that if I continue doing this 6 days a week for the next three weeks, by the time I am done I will be able to do them all(except the push-ups).

Thursday is going to be a big day for the food side of things because that will be my big shopping trip to Whole Foods. I am going to try to go through some of the recipes I have collected and make up my own meal plan. I can't use any of the ones I have found because too often they have a lot of things I won't eat in them. Then my plan is that when I make these meals, I will take them, divide them into their serving sizes, eat one and freeze the rest that way I am basically making my own microwavable meals instead of buying a ton of them all the time and having foods that are overly processed or contain things I am trying to cut out.

I will get this all figured out. I know I will.

I'm gonna feel that tomorrow.

OUCH!

So I just finished my first workout of the second phase of Slim in 6 and holy crap. I'll get to a better description about it later but first I wanted to give you my thoughts on the first phase.

I felt good when I did the first phase titled, Start it Up. It was tough but I could make through every move. The only things that I struggled with were holding my arms out forever during the first few segments and the damn push-ups. I loathe push-ups. I suck at them. I can barely do a girl push up and you had to do 10. It was a pretty basic break down. Some light warm ups that included step touches, twisting punches, knee ups, leg kicks, etc. These moves pop up several time during the workout as she uses them to transition and give you a little break between segments. Then she moves into a series of pliés, then lunges, squats and standing midsection. There is resistance band work and then floor work where you do push-ups and crunches before moving into a stretching segment to cool down. I was surprised that I would sweat more in that 30 minutes than I do on most of my runs. It was tough but I could do everything.

I was  a little nervous heading into tonight's workout, Ramp it Up,  because it is twice as long as the first and I knew it would be a lot tougher. She follows the same basic format but adds in new moves or changes the number of reps to make old moves harder. The warm up is exactly the same for the most part with just a few new moves added in. Once again you move into pliés first and you do the same moves but more reps and then she adds a few new ones. Each segment progresses this way with more reps and a few new moves added in. It was tough! I had not had any real trouble with the lunges and squats in the first workout but man does she dial up the difficulty in phase two. My quads were definitely burning so now I know I am really working my legs. I felt like in the first phase, they weren't getting much work because the running I have done the past year had strengthened them a lot. Now she is definitely pushing me past the conditioning that I have done so far. She added a buns segment to the floor routines and they are no joke. The ab workout also got much, much tougher and was a source of some frustration. I was told several months ago while doing a running workout that most of the time while you are working out, your problem area is the opposite of what is hurting. Muscles begin to hurt usually because they are overcompensating for weaker areas. This is mostly true with your abs and back and tonight I was painfully aware of how weak my abs are. I found myself needing to modify the crunches several times because doing crunches with my feet in the air or doing a double crunch is way more than my abs can handle. Also, she increased those damn push-ups by making us do two sets of 12. I said some not so nice words to her when she told us to do the second set. I hate the new stretching routine at the end as well. With Start It Up, the stretches are just very simple stretches that work out each area that she focused on, in Ramp It Up, it is yoga and my fat ass is not cool with that. I am unfamiliar with the moves and several of them are very uncomfortable because of my size. I think I am going to ignore her and do the original stretches at least until I get more flexibility and more familiar with the moves.

There are several different ways that you can approach the program and each phase. My plan was to do Start It Up for one week, Ramp It Up for two and then Burn It Up for 3. But now I think I am going to alternate Start it Up and Ramp It Up this week. I was reading in the booklet that comes with the program that it recommends falling back a program on those days when your body is really tired or sore and I am sure tomorrow will be one of those days. However, by alternating them, I will still get a harder workout and get more familiar with phase two so that I can then focus on just it for a week. Then I will try phase three and probably alternate two and three for a week before tackling three for the last two weeks of the program. That may all change but for now, that is the plan. Once I finish the initial 6 week program, I may stick with phase three for a little while or move on to the other workouts that are a follow up to the first 6 weeks. I will be getting very close to Mac's R&R by then and I really want to get as much out of this program as possible before he comes home.

Right now I am just trying to get out of my head and stop stressing over how tough tonight's workout was. I really have to make sure I stick with the program but don't over do it and hurt myself. I know it needs to be tough to really work and help me reach my goals but sometimes when I struggle, that little voice inside creeps in and tells me it is hopeless. I am just trying to shut that annoying bitch up right now. I have a lot coming up and a lot that I have to get done in the next few weeks besides working out. There is going to be a post wide yard sale day in 2 1/2 weeks and I really want to get a lot of stuff we don't need out of the house so I have a ton to go through before that day. I'm a little overwhelmed with everything right now and I am trying to keep that from making me slip up too much.

There's a reason it's called a battle and I am facing that head on right now.

Wow

That's all I have to say right now.

Now that I have signed up for WW online again I had to set a weigh-in day. I decided to go with Saturday since I usually use my weigh-in as my cheat day and most events occur on Saturdays.

So that means I weighted in this morning and I lost...

3.2 LBS

I could not believe it. I am so happy and hopefully I can keep it up. All I have done this week is watch my eating and kept it in my points and I did the first 4 days of Slim in 6. This makes me very happy and gives me a renewed hope and drive.

Unfortunately, I missed the 5K this morning because I overslept. I wasn't surprised since I was lying there still trying to go to sleep at 5AM and had to be up by 7AM. I'm still planning on running a 5K today since that is how long my normal running route is. I just have to get focused again because I have a ten miler coming up on April 15th. I'm not too worried about it since it has a very slow required pace(18 min/mile) but I would like to do well if I can. I'm hoping the training I am doing with Slim in 6 will help my running.

So far, so good

I've done 4 days of Slim in 6 now and so far it is going well. I will try to write a week wrap up on  Sunday because that will be the end of week one and Monday will be a rest day.

This morning will be my first race since the Princess. It is the Shamrock 5K that I was supposed to do 2 weeks ago but it was postponed for weather. I am really kind of nervous because I haven't really been running like I should. So we'll see how it goes and I will let you know after.

It's sort of been a roller coaster of a day. Most of it has had nothing to do with my weight loss journey, just life. But life can throw kinks in every now and then. I have tried to keep from resorting to old habits when days get really tough. Now I am just waiting to talk to my husband so I can go to bed and then try to run a 5K.

New Chapter

Tonight, I started a new chapter in this journey. A chapter I was afraid to start while training for the half last year. I have decided to start a new workout plan. I have been wanting to do one for a while but after the experience I had with one night of the Biggest Loser DVD workout, I knew I needed to wait. I was so sore the next day from the workout that I couldn't do my scheduled run. I did not want that to happen anymore so I made the decision that I would wait until after the Princess to start any serious program.  Tonight was the beginning of that. I knew that I wanted do a BeachBody workout because they are great programs and I get them at a discount because I was able to sign up as a coach for free since Mac is military. I looked at several different programs and asked several people for opinions.

After much thought and consideration, I chose to go with Slim in 6. I felt like it would fit my needs best since I want a good full body workout but I need to be conscious of the impact on my knee. In the past, I have tried workouts that left me in the wrong kind of pain. I think this one is going to be good for me though. There are still certain moves I have to be careful with but it is not too bad so far. Granted I am only in week one which is the Start it Up phase and I know things are going to get more intense but I feel like she is very aware of those types of issues and always offers an adjustment if needed. One day I would love to do a program like Chalean Extreme or TurboFire but I know that those workouts involve a lot more bouncing and jumping and twisting and I need to be in better shape before I but my knee through that kind of workout. I like Debbie's demeanor and motivation. She pushes you without making you feel bad if you can't do everything all out. She isn't overly happy or bubbly but still upbeat. She isn't loud or over excited. It is a much calmer workout that still makes you feel it. I am looking forward to working through this 6 week program and then moving on to her next step. Once I have done that, I will access where I am and find a new program to challenge and push me. I have an idea of what my next moves will be but I will wait and see before I make any commitments to them.

The first work out was tough but not discouraging. Some parts, especially involving the legs, I felt like I could do more. While parts involving my upper body made me realize how much work I need. While you are working your legs in the first part of the workout, she has you either holding your arms out to the side or punching or reaching to work them some as well. This is what makes it a true full body workout. About 10 minutes into the workout, I felt like my arms were going to fall off they were so heavy. But about the time I started feeling that, Debbie said that if your arms are getting tired, place your hands on your hips. It made me feel good because I knew that it wasn't just me. Most beginners felt this way. She mentions several times that you will get stronger as you continue the program. I was worried that if my arms were already tired, I wasn't going to be able to complete the upper body workout but that wasn't the case. My arms were fine once it was time to focus on them because the exercises in that section focus on different muscles than the ones in your shoulders that you use to hold your arms up. The only thing in the entire video that I absolutely could not do was the push-ups. Even though they were girl push-ups, I am not there yet. I already knew this though so when it was time for that, I simply stood up and did them against the wall like I have done before. I know that as I get stronger, I will be able to go lower and eventually be able to do real push-ups but for now, I will modify them.

I am also working on my eating. I signed up for WW online again so that I can track on my phone and I have been working on finding meal plans to fit my needs. I am going to try to eat cleaner and focus on more natural options but I am not going to completely limit myself. I am going to start Shakeology again, especially now that I have discover the new Tropical Strawberry flavor and I know that will help me get a lot of nutrients that I may not normally. I am working on finding more vegetables that I like thought the list is still very short. I'm really trying, and I am very determined.

One of my far off goals has suddenly gotten much closer and I need to focus if I am going to make some progress. I wanted to make enough progress that my husband sees a substantial difference when I see him for his R&R leave. Originally that was supposed to be in August but now, due to several things happening at once, I will see him in two months. AGH!! If he were to see me today, he wouldn't see much of a change since I have had several struggles the last four months since he left. So now I have a new fire under me to get things moving again. I know there won't be a huge change by the time I see him but I am hoping to at least need to go buy a few clothes in a smaller sizes. I'm hoping that this renewed motivation and determination and the new shorter time frame will give me the drive to really get things moving in the right direction so I can make a really big change in the last half of this deployment and really make his jaw drop when he comes home this fall.
